This medicine is available only with your doctor’s prescription.
Before Using Eye Wash
In deciding to use a medicine, the risks of taking the medicine must be weighed against the good it will do. This is a decision you and your doctor will make. For this medicine, the following should be considered:
Allergies
Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to this medicine or any other medicines. Also tell your health care professional if you have any other types of allergies, such as to foods, dyes, preservatives, or animals. For non-prescription products, read the label or package ingredients carefully.
Pediatric
Although there is no specific information comparing use of hypertonic sodium chloride in children with use in other age groups, this medicine is not expected to cause different side effects or problems in children than it does in adults.
Geriatric
Many medicines have not been studied specifically in older people. Therefore, it may not be known whether they work exactly the same way they do in younger adults or if they cause different side effects or problems in older people. There is no specific information comparing use of hypertonic sodium chloride in the elderly with use in other age groups.
Interactions with Medicines
Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two different medicines may be used together even if an interaction might occur. In these cases, your doctor may want to change the dose, or other precautions may be necessary. Tell your healthcare professional if you are taking any other prescription or nonprescription (over-the-counter [OTC]) medicine.
Interactions with Food/Tobacco/Alcohol
Certain medicines should not be used at or around the time of eating food or eating certain types of food since interactions may occur. Using alcohol or tobacco with certain medicines may also cause interactions to occur. Discuss with your healthcare professional the use of your medicine with food, alcohol, or tobacco.
Proper Use of sodium chloride
This section provides information on the proper use of a number of products that contain sodium chloride. It may not be specific to Eye Wash. Please read with care.
To use:
- The bottle is only partially full to provide proper drop control.
- First, wash your hands. Then tilt the head back and pull the lower eyelid away from the eye to form a pouch. Drop the medicine into the pouch and gently close the eyes. Do not blink. Keep the eyes closed for 1 or 2 minutes to allow the medicine to be absorbed.
- If you think you did not get the drop of medicine into your eye properly, use another drop.
- Immediately after using the eye drops, wash your hands to remove any medicine that may be on them.
- To keep the medicine as germ-free as possible, do not touch the applicator tip to any surface (including the eye). Also, keep the container tightly closed. Serious damage to the eye and possible loss of vision may result from using contaminated eye drops.
Dosing
The dose of this medicine will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor’s orders or the directions on the label. The following information includes only the average doses of this medicine. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.
The amount of medicine that you take depends on the strength of the medicine. Also, the number of doses you take each day, the time allowed between doses, and the length of time you take the medicine depend on the medical problem for which you are using the medicine.
- For ophthalmic solution (eye drops) dosage form:
- For swelling of the cornea:
- Adults—Use 1 drop every three or four hours.
- Children—Use and dose must be determined by your doctor.
- For swelling of the cornea:
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.
Storage
Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep from freezing.
Keep out of the reach of children.
Do not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed.

What is eyebright?
The use of eyebright in cultural and traditional settings may differ from concepts accepted by current Western medicine. When considering the use of herbal supplements, consultation with a primary health care professional is advisable. Additionally, consultation with a practitioner trained in the uses of herbal/health supplements may be beneficial, and coordination of treatment among all health care providers involved may be advantageous.
Eyebright is also known as Euphrasia officinalis and euphrasia.
Eyebright has been used for congestion of the nose, sinuses, and eyes; inflammation of the eyelids; eye styes; eye fatigue symptoms; other eye disorders; and coughs and hoarseness. Since the efficacy of eyebright has not been proven in the treatment of eye disorders and application to the eyes may be unsanitary, the use of eyebright in the eye is generally not recommended.
Eyebright has not been evaluated by the FDA for safety, effectiveness, or purity. All potential risks and/or advantages of eyebright may not be known. Additionally, there are no regulated manufacturing standards in place for these compounds. There have been instances where herbal/health supplements have been sold which were contaminated with toxic metals or other drugs. Herbal/health supplements should be purchased from a reliable source to minimize the risk of contamination.
Eyebright may also have uses other than those listed in this medication guide.
What is the most important information I should know about eyebright?
Since the efficacy of eyebright has not been proven in the treatment of eye disorders and application to the eyes may be unsanitary, the use of eyebright in the eyes is generally not recommended.
Inflammation or irritation of the eyes could be signs of a potentially serious infection. Eyebright should not be used to treat an eye condition without consulting a physician. Eyebright should also not be used in the eyes if you wear any type of contact lenses or if you have had any recent eye surgery (laser vision correction, cataract surgery, cornea transplant surgery, etc.).

Generic Name: chlorpheniramine, methscopolamine, and phenylephrine (KLOR fe NEER a meen, METH skoe POL a meen, FEN il EFF rin)
Brand Names: Aerohist Plus, Ah-Chew, Chlor-Mes, Dallergy, Denaze, Duradryl, Durahist PE, DuraTan PE, Extendryl Chews, Histatab PH, Omnihist L.A., Ralix, Redur-PCM, Rescon MX
What is Extendryl Chews (chlorpheniramine, methscopolamine, and phenylephrine)?
Chlorpheniramine is an antihistamine that reduces the natural chemical histamine in the body. Histamine can produce symptoms of sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose.
Methscopolamine is an anticholinergic (an-tye-kol-in-URJ-ik) that has a drying effect on the nasal passages.
Phenylephrine is a decongestant that shrinks blood vessels in the nasal passages. Dilated blood vessels can cause nasal congestion (stuffy nose).
The combination of chlorpheniramine, methscopolamine, and phenylephrine is used to treat runny nose, sneezing, itchy throat, watery eyes, and sinus congestion caused by allergies, the common cold, or the flu.
Chlorpheniramine, methscopolamine, and phenylephrine may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.
What is the most important information I should know about Extendryl Chews (chlorpheniramine, methscopolamine, and phenylephrine)?
Do not use this medicine if you have used an MAO inhibitor such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), rasagiline (Azilect), selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) within the past 14 days. Serious, life-threatening side effects can occur if you take cold or allergy medicine before the MAO inhibitor has cleared from your body.
Before using this medicine, tell your doctor if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, or a heart rhythm disorder, circulation problems, glaucoma, diabetes, a thyroid disorder, kidney disease, or problems with urination.
Do not use any other over-the-counter cold, cough, or allergy medication without first asking your doctor or pharmacist. If you take certain products together you may accidentally take too much of a certain drug. Read the label of any other medicine you are using to see if it contains chlorpheniramine or phenylephrine. Talk with your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 5 days of treatment, or if you have a fever with a headache, cough, or skin rash.
What should I discuss with my health care provider before taking Extendryl Chews (chlorpheniramine, methscopolamine, and phenylephrine)?
Do not take this medication if you are allergic to chlorpheniramine, methscopolamine, phenylephrine, or to other cold or allergy medicines, diet pills, stimulants, or ADHD medications. Do not use this medicine if you have used an MAO inhibitor such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), rasagiline (Azilect), selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) within the past 14 days. Serious, life-threatening side effects can occur if you take a cold or allergy medicine before the MAO inhibitor has cleared from your body.
Before using this medication, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have:
-
heart disease, high blood pressure, or a heart rhythm disorder;
-
a blood vessel disorder or circulation problems;
-
glaucoma;
-
diabetes;
-
a thyroid disorder;
-
kidney disease;
-
asthma;
-
an enlarged prostate; or
-
problems with urination.
This medication may be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. This medication can decrease breast milk production, and also may pass into breast milk and could harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
Artificially-sweetened liquid forms of cold medicine may contain phenylalanine. This would be important to know if you have phenylketonuria (PKU). Check the ingredients and warnings on the medication label if you are concerned about phenylalanine.
How should I take Extendryl Chews (chlorpheniramine, methscopolamine, and phenylephrine)?
Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label. Cold medicine is usually taken for only a short time until your symptoms clear up.
Take this medicine with a full glass of water. It is best to take this medicine with food.
Measure the liquid form of this medicine with a special dose-measuring spoon or cup, not a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one. The suspension liquid form should be shaken well just before you measure a dose.
Do not crush, chew, break, or open an extended-release tablet unless your doctor tells you to. Swallow the pill whole. It is specially made to release medicine slowly in the body. Breaking or opening the pill would cause too much of the drug to be released at one time. However, some extended-release pills can be broken to split the dose. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions.
The chewable tablet must be chewed completely before you swallow it.
Tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 5 days of treatment, or if you have a fever with a headache, cough, or skin rash.
This medication can cause you to have unusual results with allergy skin tests. Tell any doctor who treats you that you are taking an antihistamine.
Store this medicine at room temperature, away from heat, light, and moisture.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at your next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
What happens if I overdose?
Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine. Overdose symptoms may include feeling restless or nervous, nausea, vomiting, extreme drowsiness, confusion, hallucinations, uneven heart rate, fainting, or seizure (convulsions).
What should I avoid while taking Extendryl Chews (chlorpheniramine, methscopolamine, and phenylephrine)?
This medication can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert.
Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated during exercise and in hot weather.
Cold or allergy medicine, narcotic pain medicine, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, and medicine for seizures, depression or anxiety can add to sleepiness caused by chlorpheniramine or methscopolamine. Tell your doctor if you need to use any of these other medicines.
Avoid taking diet pills, caffeine pills, or other stimulants (such as ADHD medications) without your doctor’s advice.
Do not use any other over-the-counter cold, cough, or allergy medication without first asking your doctor or pharmacist. Chlorpheniramine and phenylephrine are contained in many medicines available over the counter. If you take certain products together you may accidentally take too much of a certain drug. Read the label of any other medicine you are using to see if it contains chlorpheniramine or phenylephrine. Avoid drinking alcohol. It can add to drowsiness caused by an antihistamine.

Extendryl GCP
30/06/10
Generic Name: carbetapentane, guaifenesin, and phenylephrine (kar BET a PEN tane, gwye FEN e sin, and FEN il EFF rin)
Brand Names: Aquatab C, Carbatab-12, Carbetaplex, Extendryl GCP, Gentex 30, Gentex LQ, Levall, MonteCough, Phencarb GG
What is Extendryl GCP (carbetapentane, guaifenesin, and phenylephrine)?
Carbetapentane is a cough suppressant. It affects the signals in the brain that trigger cough reflex.
Guaifenesin is an expectorant. It helps loosen mucus congestion in your chest and throat, making it easier to cough out through your mouth.
Phenylephrine is a decongestant that shrinks blood vessels in the nasal passages. Dilated blood vessels can cause nasal congestion (stuffy nose).
The combination of carbetapentane, guaifenesin, and phenylephrine is used to treat stuffy nose, cough, and chest congestion caused by the common cold or flu.
This medication will not treat a cough that is caused by smoking, asthma, or emphysema.
Carbetapentane, guaifenesin, and phenylephrine may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.
What is the most important information I should know about Extendryl GCP (carbetapentane, guaifenesin, and phenylephrine)?
You should not use this medication if you are allergic to carbetapentane, guaifenesin, or phenylephrine. Do not give this medication to a child younger than 2 years old. Always ask a doctor before giving a cough or cold medicine to a child. Death can occur from the misuse of cough and cold medicines in very young children. Do not use a cough or cold medicine if you have used an MAO inhibitor such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), rasagiline (Azilect), selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) within the past 14 days.
Before you take carbetapentane, guaifenesin, and phenylephrine, tell your doctor if you have asthma or other breathing disorder, heart disease, high blood pressure, glaucoma, diabetes, liver or kidney disease, urination problems, or an overactive thyroid.
Also tell your doctor about all other medications you use.
This medication can cause side effects that may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert and able to see clearly.
Talk with your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 7 days of taking this medication. Call your doctor any time if your symptoms get worse or if you also have a fever, headache, or skin rash.
What should I discuss with my health care provider before taking Extendryl GCP (carbetapentane, guaifenesin, and phenylephrine)?
Do not use a cough or cold medicine if you have used an MAO inhibitor such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), rasagiline (Azilect), selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) within the past 14 days. Serious, life-threatening side effects can occur if you take a cough or cold medicine before the MAO inhibitor has cleared from your body. You should not use this medication if you are allergic to carbetapentane, guaifenesin, or phenylephrine.
If you have certain conditions, you may need a dose adjustment or special tests to safely use this medication. Before you take carbetapentane, guaifenesin, and phenylephrine, tell your doctor if you have:
-
asthma, emphysema, or other breathing problems;
-
heart disease or high blood pressure;
-
glaucoma;
-
diabetes;
-
liver or kidney disease;
-
an enlarged prostate or urination problems; or
-
overactive thyroid.
FDA pregnancy category C. It is not known whether this medication is harmful to an unborn baby. Before taking carbetapentane, guaifenesin, and phenylephrine, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. This medication can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Older adults may be more likely to have side effects from this medication.
How should I take Extendryl GCP (carbetapentane, guaifenesin, and phenylephrine)?
Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label. Cold medicine is usually taken for only a short time until your symptoms clear up.
Do not give this medication to a child younger than 2 years old. Always ask a doctor before giving a cough or cold medicine to a child. Death can occur from the misuse of cough and cold medicines in very young children. Take this medication with a full glass of water. Drink extra fluids to help loosen the congestion and lubricate your throat while you are taking this medication. You may take this medication with or without food. Taking it with food or milk may decrease stomach upset.
Measure the liquid medicine with a special dose-measuring spoon or cup, not a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one.
Do not crush, chew or break an extended-release tablet. Swallow the pill whole. Breaking or opening the pill may cause too much of the drug to be released at one time.
Talk with your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 7 days of taking this medication. Call your doctor any time if your symptoms get worse or if you also have a fever, headache, or skin rash.
This medication can cause you to have unusual results with medical tests. Tell any doctor who treats you if you have taken a cold medicine within the past few days.
If you need to have any type of surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time if you have taken a cold medicine within the past few days.
Store this medication at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light. Do not allow liquid medicine to freeze.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Since cold or allergy medicine is often taken as needed, you may not be on a dosing schedule. If you are taking the medication regularly, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then to take the medicine and skip the missed dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
What happens if I overdose?
Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine.
Overdose can cause confusion, agitation, hallucinations, or seizure (convulsions).
What should I avoid while taking Extendryl GCP (carbetapentane, guaifenesin, and phenylephrine)?
This medication can cause side effects that may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert and able to see clearly. Do not use any other over-the-counter cough, cold, or allergy medication without first asking your doctor or pharmacist. Guaifenesin and decongestants are contained in many combination medicines available over the counter. If you take certain products together you may accidentally take too much of a certain drug. Read the label of any other medicine you are using to see if it contains a guaifenesin or a decongestant.
